The Viktualienmarkt in the heart of Munich is a continuous market for foodstuffs. The former market place is today the Marienplatz (St. Marie-Square) has become too small at the beginning of the 19th century, so King Max I. Joseph led the market relocate to its current location.

The food market is dominated by a beautifully decorated maypole with signs of Munich's guilds.
