La Catedral de Durango es la máxima exponente de la arquitectura religiosa de la entidad. La construcción original se inició bajo el mandato del obispo García Legazpi hacia el año de 1695, según un proyecto del arquitecto Mateo Nuñez. Se cree que la obra estaba casi concluida en 1711, aunque en 1840 sufre una severa transformación por la remodelación ordenada por el obispo Zubiría; aunque se haya conservado su aspecto exterior de estilo barroco muy severo, no obstante las portadas laterales les exhiben un exquisito estilo churrigueresco.
