Porto, Praia da Luz, Foz do Douro, aerial view
Portugal

In the mid-19th century, the parish of Foz do Douro is integrated in the municipality of Porto. With the improvement of transport connections to the city of Porto, either by river or by land, Foz becomes the first seaside resort in Porto, due to the fashion of “baths” by medical recommendation. This period corresponds to a great urban development in this area: public gardens are created, roads are opened and countless houses are built, according to a type of holiday rental, some of them palatial, others adopting an image of a chalet, which we can still find today .

The bathing character of this area will be reinforced in the 30s of the 20th century, when the great tourist promotion works of Foz are carried out, with the construction of Praça de Gonçalves Zarco, the Esplanade do Molhe and the public promenade of the avenues of Montevideo and Brazil, including the pergola, the light source and several sculptural elements.

Throughout that century, there was a replacement of the built front of Avenida do Brasil, which is being occupied by multi-family buildings with an average of 5 floors, this densification corresponding to the transformation of Foz into a permanent housing area in the city of Porto.
