From one of the smaller peaks of the Soiern Group at a height of about 6420 ft this place offers a first view at this particular side range of the Karwendel. A lovely track from the Isar valley down below at 2870 ft leads here.
Following the trail up the hill and on the other side of the cirque you can see the summit cross of Schöttelkarspitze, which was one of the favourite places of Ludwig II, King of Bavaria. Naturally, he didn't bother to hike all the way up but instead used a comfortable sedan chair carried by his servants to reach a specially erected pavilion.
Turning counter clockwise and following the Valley of the River Isar upstream passing Lake Walchen and two lovely villages (Wallgau and Krün) we see a glimpse of the town of Mittenwald behind the Signalkopf peak. Behind that, to the right of this town the Zugspitze massif can be seen, covered with glaciers. To the left of Mittenwald we get a nice view of the Karwendel range of the Bavarian Alps.

Oberbayern liegt im Südosten des Freistaats Bayern und grenzt im Süden und Osten an Österreich, im Nordosten an Niederbayern und die Oberpfalz, im Nordwesten an Mittelfranken und im Westen an Schwaben. Verwaltungssitz des Bezirks und gleichzeitig Regierungssitz des Regierungsbezirks ist München.
Oberbayerns Grenzen haben sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte mehrfach verändert. Insbesondere gibt es keinen spezifisch oberbayerischen Dialekt.
Der Begriff „Oberbayern“ erscheint zum ersten Mal im Jahre 1255 bei der bayerischen Landesteilung. Die Ausdehnung war jedoch ursprünglich eine andere: Der Chiemgau und die Gegend von Bad Reichenhall gehörten damals zu Niederbayern.
