Southern view, Powell Point, Utah, USA
Utah

In 1872 Almon Thompson explored the area between the Dirty Devil river to the east and the Paria river to the west, summiting this point and naming it after John Wesley Powell.  That 1872 expedition was the first to "discover" that the Escalante River (between the Dirty Devil and the Paria) was its own river (and not the same drainage as the Dirty Devil).  It was the last river in the contiguous states to be named.  In view, to the right we have the pink amphitheaters of Bryce Canyon.  Toward the middle, gray cliffs spread below nearby Canaan peak.  In the far distance beyond Mt. Canaan you can just make out Navajo Mountain on the far side of Lake Powell, 70+ miles away.  To the east and north (the left side of our view) the Henry Mountains near Capitol Reef are visible in the haze.  Between the Henries and our viewpoint, the red rock in the distance is the vast canyonland drainage of the Escalante River.
