昆钢有两湖，一为小塘花园，一为日月湖。昆明钢铁控股有限公司始建于1939年2月，总部位于春城昆明西南近郊的安宁市境内，是全国特大型工业企业和中国企业500强之一，云南省最大的钢铁联合生产基地。现具备年产700万吨钢的综合生产能力，是集钢铁冶金、煤焦化工、矿业开发、重型装备制造、水泥建材、房地产、现代物流、工程设计、海外业务等为一体的特大型企业集团。2009年实现销售收入410亿元、利税28亿元，工业增加值57亿元。截至2009年末，有全资子公司20个、控股子公司8个、参股子公司2个，资产总额370亿元，在岗职工28000余人。
