The Israel Aquarium
Middle East

Opened at the end of 2017, the Israel Aquarium is one of the hottest Jerusalem attractions. It is located next to the Biblical Zoo “From a technical point of view, creating an aquarium in the mountains of Jerusalem was a difficult task,” says the head veterinarian of the new facility, Dr. Liz Kaufman. “We had to create an aquatic environment in which marine animals could live, feed and breed.” The creators of the aquarium hope to turn it into one of the leading tourist centers in the city, which is part of the national biodiversity conservation program in Israel. It covers an area of 20 hectares, and contains 1.6 million liters of Mediterranean water. Among the marine animals that settled in it are sharks, stingrays, sea horses. Here - tens of thousands of species of fish, crustaceans, sea urchins, and many other representatives of the marine kingdom. Despite the temptation to import exotic animals and fish, it was decided that only those living in Israel would settle in the aquarium. There will be no mammals. As in other similar objects in the world, visitors to the aquarium will be able to pass through tunnels laid inside huge containers (there are 33 of them), looking at the fish swimming behind the glass through glass. Zoo and aquarium has a separate entrance and separate admission fee.

More About Middle East

Modern civilization began right here in the Tigris-Euphrates river valley. Also known as the Fertile Crescent or Mesopotamia, this is the place where, six thousand years ago, agriculture, writing and mathematics were brought into widespread use.The term "Middle East" comes from the British navy, which used it to describe the countries on the trade route from Europe to India and China. Everything from Afghanistan to Morocco may possibly be classified as "middle eastern", depending on whom you ask -- and when.Only a partial list of past Empires in the middle eastern territory includes Sumeria, Babylonia, Persia, the Ottoman Empire and the Roman Empire! When northern Europe was still lurking about in slimy cold stone castles playing chess, the Middle East was enjoying the flowers of poetry, luxurious craftsmanship, music and literature. In fact, the Renaissance in Europe was partly inspired by stories brought back from the middle east by travelers along the trade route.Strategic location, religious history and the world's largest supply of crude oil have kept the Middle East at the center of world activity for centuries. The saga continues.Text by Steve Smith.
