The ruins of Ardvreck Castle, Sutherland
Scotland

The ruinous Ardvreck Castle was built by the Clan MacLeod in the late 15th century. The L-Plan tower house stands on a promontory of land on the north shore of Loch Assynt.

Aside from playing a role in typical clan warfare during the medieval period, it is best known as the place to which the fugitive Marquis of Montrose was taken in 1650, before his handover to the Earl of Argyll for execution.
