The ruins of Middleham Castle, Yorkshire
England

Guarding a key crossing across the Pennines, Middleham was fortified by the Normans shortly after the Norman Conquest. The present castle, with its Great Tower, dates from the late 12th century and as a favoured stronghold was developed for several centuries by the powerful Neville family.

It was also once the childhood home of the future Richard III. By the 17th century it had fallen into ruin.
