Minnipa is a small town servicing surrounding grain farms and tourists travelling along National Highway 1 or the nearby Gawler Ranges National Park. The town is 250 kilometres north from Port Lincoln and 180 kilometres east from Ceduna inmidst a vast wheat belt. Close to town are a few interesting granite rock formations such as Tcharkulda Rock with picnic facilities and the wave shaped Pildappa rock.
An old narrow gauge railway line between Port lincoln and Thevenard made this small town a major railway centre. The railway line was opened in 1913 when the town consisted of 2 tents only.
The town features a hotel/motel, caravan park, supermarket and a roadhouse.
