Veerpoort Hasselt The Netherlands
Netherlands
Boulevard of Hasselt on the Zwarte Water. During construction in 2016, the Veerpoort was partly rebuilt on the old foundations. Bridgekeeper's house with bridgehead on the quay from circa 1896, bridge demolished in 1972 but rebuilt downstream. In the Middle Ages, Hasselt was completely enclosed by a defensive wall with three main gates. Since 2022, the Veerpoort has been back in Hasselt. Although it is a replica, built on the foundations of the original gate on the Zwarte Water. In the background, to the left of the lantern, a blond lady is walking towards Hotel de Herderin. De Herderin has been a catering company since 1605. Travelers used to be able to go here for a meal and overnight stay with the shepherd who lived in the building at the time. When he died, his wife continued and that is why this Hotel has been called the Shepherdess since time immemorial.
