This ancient path in soft volcanic rock (tufa) has been hollowed out by carts, rain, and periodic leveling. The paths are a typical feature of the area and usually connect the top of a plain with the bottom of a glen. This particular one, called Il Cavone, has Etruscan inscriptions and leads to a nearby 7th century BC Etruscan necropolis.
