Bronze and granite statue of king Vittorio Emanuele II, erected by architect Pietro Costa in 1899 after years of controversies between king Umberto I (who wanted and payed the monument) and the municipality of Turin.

Capital as well as cultural and business center of the Piedmont region, Turin is famous as headquarters of Fiat and Lancia, birthplace of Telecom Italia and Rai television and host of the 2006 Winter Olympics.
