Yungay Cemetery in Memory of the Tragic Avalanche
Peru

39 years ago on May 31, 1970 a devastating Ritcher Scale 8 earthquake struck off the coast of northen peru setting off a giant avalanche of rocks, mud, and ice off the north face of Huascáran(6768m) that came rushing down and wiping everything in its path. The old town of Yungay was instantly swallowed by this debris 914m wide and except 350 lucky souls all 2,5000 inhabitants of Yungay became victims to this tragic event. Today the site where old Yungay once was a cemetery cum memorial has been built to commemorate the death. Huascáran, the highest of all the mountains in the Cordillera Blanca range of the Andes takes the centre stage in this shot.
