The artificial lake Pineios stems from Pineios River in Ilia Prefecture are known from ancient times. According to mythology Heracles in his fifth labour in order to clean the filth from the Augean Stables in a single day re-routed the Pineios and Alpheus river. The lake is mostly used for irrigation.
