Grass Lake in recent years is usually a very wet meadow. The soil is like a mushy sponge while walking on it. It apears dry but sinks several inches with each step. Grass Lake is near the Luther pass summit which connects South lake Tahoe with Hope Valley via highway 89. This would be the route taken to Kirkwood ski resport if travelling from Tahoe. The wetlands is one of many headwaters that feed the crystal clear waters of Lake Tahoe.

That is to say, the West Coast functions as the imagination of the US, like a weird little brother who teases everybody then gets famous for making freaky art.
The central part of the country is flat farmland all the way over to the Rocky Mountains. Up in the northwest corner you can find creative people in places like Portland and Seatle, along with awesome snowboarding and good beer.
