Persistence
California

Almost a year after the Station fire, winter rains have managed to awaken grass seeds that survived the fire. Just below and to the left of the sun is a stand of pines that got almost completely knocked out and only a handfull have recovered a year later. The manzanita bushes (blackened tangles of branches, one just below and to the left of the vehicle), on the other had, are very happy. Manzanita has adapted to the fire cycle in the forest and requires periodic ground level fires to clean it out. If fire is prevented, however, the brush grows without restriction and when fire inevitably gets to it after several years, it burns hot enough to unrecoverably destroy the trees.
