Il Castillo del Rey è stato costruito nel 1210 su uno sperone roccioso che domina la baia di San Vicente de la Barquera.

Il forte ha una lunghezza totale di 54 metri, mentre le sue imponenti pareti in alcune aree raggiungono uno spessore di 2,5 m. e si estendevano (sono ancora presenti in parte) lungo le pendici della rupe racchiudendo il centro storico.
