Karnak-Temple - colossal statue of King Ramses II
Luxor & Karnak

We are here in the First Great Court of the Temple.

Right in front of us stands a colossal statue of King Ramses II made of reddish granite. In front of him, a little bit smaller, his daughter Intanat. The king, as a mediator of man and God, presents himself in superhuman grandeur in front of the temple entrance.

We also see a large column of calcite alabaster in the middle of the courtyard.  It is the centre of a colonnade - a colonnade - erected in the 25th dynasty around 750 BC in front of the second pylon at the entrance gate of the temple. The First Pylon did not exist at that time. A single column of this colonnade has been standing upright since ancient times. Today it is called the "Taharka Column" after its builder.

More About Luxor & Karnak

Part of the Holy Land, Egypt offers a fascinating mixture of ancient pyramids, temples and other religious monuments. There are numerous possibilities to explore Egypt from desert treks to trips down the Nile or scuba diving in the Red Sea and along the Sinai coast. Cairo, which means “The Triumphant”, is home to the pyramids, sphinx and over 17 million residents within its metropolitan area. Luxor is often described as the world’s largest open air museum, built on the ancient city of Thebes. The Karnak temple complex, located near Luxor, is a collection of ancient temples, chapels and various other buildings.
