Natuureservaat Rammelaars, Ham - Kwaadmechelen
Belgium

The rattle is named after the numerous hares and rabbits who live. A male rabbit or hare is a rattle''''.'''' The area between the Albert Canal and the Canal Dessel-Kwaadmechelen is the wettest of the net-yet-Ham Limburg town. The small-scale farming there earlier quarter height: hay, irrigation, turf stabbing, iron ore, win, chopping wood ... The result of all these human activities is a wide variety of habitats and vegetation types. Besides the Liege creek meadows were formerly''''''''beweterd or stream water flooded. This made use of grasslands by the richer food sludge that brought the creek. When manure is scarce, this was obviously a bonus. In the past sought Kempenaars here to burn peat and iron ore to melt. With the iron ore operation in the nineteenth century were golden things done. At the turn went downhill. The small spread all over Belgium were no longer competitive. Natuurpunt sets the old farming methods, which many animals and plants have adapted further. The Rattle Farm became the base for the management of large grazing and mowing the meadows.

More About Belgium

Belgium is a country in northwest Europe. Founding member of the European Union, it covers an area of 30,528 square kilometres and has a population of about 10.7 million. From the end of the Middle Ages until the 17th century, it was a prosperous centre of commerce and culture. Upon its independence, Belgium eagerly participated in the Industrial Revolution and, at the end of the nineteenth century, possessed several colonies in Africa. Today, Belgium's strongly globalized economy and its transportation infrastructure are integrated with the rest of Europe. Its location at the heart of a highly industrialized region helps made it 2007 the world's 15th largest trading nation. Cultural life is nowadays concentrated within each language community and a variety of barriers have made a shared cultural sphere less pronounced. Anyway, the region corresponding to today's Belgium has seen the flourishing of major artistic movements that have had tremendous influence on European art and culture.
