Winter on the Außenalster in Hamburg, February 2012. After just a a few days of severe frost, the Alster froze over. This occured last time in 2010 after over 10 years pause.
At the Außenalster (Outer Alster) in Hamburg. The Alster river has been dammed in the centre of Hamburg, where it forms two artificial lakes in the city - the smaller Binnenalster (inner Alster) and the bigger Außenalster (outer Alster). The Außenalster along with the surrounding parks (which had been a closed private area until 1952) are a favourite recreational area in the heart of the city, for the residents as well as for professionals.
