San Felipe de Neri built in 1793 is the oldest church in Old Town Albuquerque, New Mexico and also the oldest in New Mexico. Many Americans forget that the whole Southwestern United States was once owned by Mexico. Most of the territory was obtained through the Mexican War of 1846 to 1848. One of the ironies of the War was that some of the generals and other officers fighting for the U.S. would soon be fighting against the United States in the Civil War. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo specified the major consequence of the war: the forced Mexican Cession of the territories of Alta California and New Mexico to the U.S. in exchange for $18 million. Arizona later obtained additional parts of Mexico through the Gadsen Purchase. Albuquerque is home to the University of New Mexico (UNM), Kirtland Air Force Base, Sandia National Laboratories, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, and Petroglyph National Monument. Albuquerque was founded in 1706 as the Spanish colonial outpost of Ranchos de Alburquerque. Albuquerque preserves much of its historical Spanish cultural heritage.

New Mexico is a state located in the southwestern region of the United States. Inhabited by Native American populations for many centuries, it has also been part of the Imperial Spanish viceroyalty of New Spain, part of Mexico, and a U.S. territory. Among U.S. states, New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanics at 45% (2008 estimate), being descendants of Spanish colonists and recent immigrants from Latin America. It also has the third-highest percentage of Native Americans after Alaska and Oklahoma, and the fifth-highest total number of Native Americans after California, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Texas. The tribes represented in the state consist of mostly Navajo and Pueblo peoples. As a result, the demographics and culture of the state are unique for their strong Spanish, Mexican, and Native American cultural influences. At a population density of 16 per square mile, New Mexico is the sixth most sparsely inhabited U.S. state.
