單面山是指一翼坡度陡急、一翼緩傾的山形，是因為地層被不等量抬升所形成的一種構造地形，兩座單面山之間則以狹長的海蝕平台相連。

為了區別起見，在入口處附近的這座單面山以「大單面山」來稱呼，而岬角末端深入海中的單面山，則以當地人慣稱的「龜頭山」來區別。從大單面山的觀景亭除了可遠眺整個野柳岬，還可以從岩壁上發現一層層造山運動所留下擠壓、扭曲的痕跡，並看著燭台石、薑石、覃狀石等分區整齊排列在海蝕平台上。
