Arched gate under gallery of teutonic knights castle
Poland

Arched gate under a gallery of the teutonic knights castle in Torun. The gallery connected the main castle building, of which now only are ruins are left, with the Gdanisko sanitary and defence tower. The tower served two purposes: it defended the eastern part of the castle walls and was used as a lavatory. The castle was built from middle the 13th to middle the 15th century. It had an unusual shape of a hoof. A massive octagonal tower dominated over the castle. The castle was taken and destroyed by the townspeople in 1454 during an uprising against the Teutonic Order Knights. Photo's taken on July 14, 2010.
