O barulho dela pode ser ouvido de longe e é uma marca registrada de Tiradentes. O passeio de Maria Fumaça reserva encantos a crianças, jovens e adultos, que se revezam entre os sentimentos de surpresa e admiração. A viagem de Tiradentes a São João del Rei, que dura pouco mais de 30 minutos, fica na lembrança dos visitantes, que podem avistar de um dos nove vagões cenas típicas do interior de Minas Gerais e o imponente Rio das Mortes.
A Maria Fumaça foi inaugurada em 1881 pelo então Imperador Dom Pedro II. O turista atento perceberá o apito típico da locomotiva de vários pontos da cidade. Uma curiosidade é ver como os funcionários da rodovia viram a locomotiva. É possível conferir essa curiosa operação na própria estação ferroviária. A locomotiva que faz o transporte de passageiros foi produzida nos Estados Unidos pela Baldwin Locomotiv Works.
Dica: a cidade de São João del Rei conta com o interessante Museu Ferroviário, que funciona na Estação Ferroviária da Estrada de Ferro Oeste de Minas e apresenta equipamentos, painéis ilustrativos e fotografias que contam um pouquinho da história dessa imperdível atração turística.
