History


Rullingen castle located in the heart ofa Hesbye in Land of the Loon, surrounded by bronze green oak wood. Limburg short at best.

The beautiful landscape, where the meadows and fields slowly up and down slope, radiates calm. Everything speaks of fertility and carefree life. This beautiful area is the domain of Rullingen. On the horizon are signs the church towers of several sleepy villages off. The charming medieval town Borgloon is only one far away. The historic cities of Tongeren and Sint-Truiden, but also the "town flavor" Hasselt and Maastricht are sparkling in no time to achieve.

Castle Rullingen had a rich past. In the Middle Ages, during the reign of the Counts of Loon and the Principality of Liege, stood on this spot a "mottoor or castle tower. The vaulted cellars and the foundation of the current castle would still remaining from that time. In the fortified tower was a well that allowed long siege endured. This source also provides still own the castle of water.

In 1640, the present castle built in Maasland Renaissance style. Baroque influences are found in the return date stone pediments above the entrance doors and windows. The wrought iron bridge, lantern poles and the swans on the water of the moat of later date. Another surprising feature is the sundial.

After a fire in 1920 the castle was restored between 1921 and 1935 by architect P. Long Rock from Leuven, who had already made a name by several other successful castle renovations. The castle at the hearing Hesbaye farm was partly his fault replaced by a geometrical French garden.

The recent restoration work carried out to ensure the historical authenticity of the castle. The guests will surely be charmed by the old castle chapel through which they reach their rooms.

The domain had been several owners. Of the Castle Hills and the Greenspun family went in the 18th century to the Zeegraede Baron and his descendants. In 1910 the castle and its surroundings belonged to the family Pang Aert d'Opdorp. Currently the domain is part of the historical heritage of the Province of Limburg.

The province of Limburg to the areas around the castle an arboretum and a fructuarium constructed. Besides an interesting collection of scientific timber plants we find, to the delight of the cook, hoogstamfruitbomen 142 different varieties. In May 2005 a new vineyard was built in 6000 comprising 1.3 hectares vines (5km). Five varieties were planted including: 2000 Pinot Blanc, Tokay Pinot gris 3000, 200 Kerner, 200 Riesling, Pinot noir 600. Also staying two Friesian mares in the field behind the castle. This extension covers the domain by approximately 16 acres.

Until 1976 the castle was not open to the public. Now this exceptional heritage with its exceptional location and unique atmosphere open to all cultural and culinary connoisseurs, which obviously contributes to the appearance of high living that the province Limburg, the city Borgloon, the executive, Cees van Corler our chef and his team as high very much.
