Squirrel Point Lighthouse, Arrowsic, Maine, USA 1
USA

Completed in 1898 at the cost of $4,650, the Squirrel Point Light is located on Arrowsic Island on the Kennebec River in the State of Maine, USA.  It is one of four lighthouses on the river between the Atlantic Ocean and the city of Bath. Squirrel Point was given its name in 1717 when the Governor of Massachusetts’ frigate, The Squirrel, ran aground there returning from a meeting with local tribe members not far upriver from the point.

The Kennebec River was (and still is) an important commercial waterway and to protect shipping, congress and U.S. President Grover Cleveland appropriated funds in 1895 for lighthouses, keeper’s dwellings and barns to be constructed on the Kennebec.

In 1902 the light’s optics were upgraded with the addition of a fifth order Fresnel lens. Presently this lens is on display at the Portland Head Lighthouse museum as the Squirrel Point light was fully automated in 1979 and now uses a modern 250mm lens.

The light shows red when projected through the lighthouses’ windows with a section of white to the south. To this date it is an active aid to navigation.

The site was placed on the US National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It is accessible by a two-thirds mile hike through woods, marsh, old orchard, mature sumac and eastern red cedar forest types. It is a favorite spot for mosquitoes in the fall.

More About USA

The United States is one of the most diverse countries on earth, jam packed full of amazing sights from St. Patrick's cathedral in New York to Mount Hollywood California. The Northeast region is where it all started. Thirteen British colonies fought the American Revolution from here and won their independence in the first successful colonial rebellion in history. Take a look at these rolling hills carpeted with foliage along the Hudson river here, north of New York City. The American south is known for its polite people and slow pace of life. Probably they move slowly because it's so hot. Southerners tend not to trust people from "up north" because they talk too fast. Here's a cemetery in Georgia where you can find graves of soldiers from the Civil War.The West Coast is sort of like another country that exists to make the east coast jealous. California is full of nothing but grizzly old miners digging for gold, a few gangster rappers, and then actors. That is to say, the West Coast functions as the imagination of the US, like a weird little brother who teases everybody then gets famous for making freaky art.The central part of the country is flat farmland all the way over to the Rocky Mountains. Up in the northwest corner you can find creative people in places like Portland and Seattle, along with awesome snowboarding and good beer. Text by Steve Smith.
