Новый Эрмитаж - первое здание в России, созданное специально для размещения художественных коллекций музея, было возведено по проекту немецкого зодчего Лео фон Кленце. Архитекторы В.П. Стасов и Н.Е. Ефимов, осуществлявшие в 1842-1851 гг. проект Кленце, внесли существенные изменения в замысел мюнхенского коллеги, связав здание со сложившимся архитектурным окружением.
Новому Эрмитажу, возведенному в стиле историзма, присущи строгость и монументальность облика, гармония архитектурных объемов. Вход в музей акцентирован величественным портиком с фигурами атлантов, высеченными из серого сердобольского гранита

Moscow has been the capital of Russia for almost its entire history. The exception is during the period of the Russian Empire, which lasted from 1721 until the Russian Revolution 1917. For these two centuries the capital was St. Petersburg. The Russian Empire was the second largest contiguous Empire in world memory; only the Mongol Empire had been greater.
