Beacon Rock served as a landmark for early explorers along the Columbia River as they traveled towards the Pacific Ocean. In 1915, a 3/4-mile trail to it's summit was built by Henry Biddle, and today visitors to Beacon Rock State Park in Washington State can still climb the switchback trail for views of the Columbia River.
