Challenges of one small organic farmer
USA

Some years can be more challenging than others.

Scott (left), the orchardist with the PARADOXICAL SMILE, is holding a photo taken by his son, Kye.  It is of the wildfire they did their best to hold off the previous summer (August 2015). However, a longtime-family friend, Oro (left), was there to help cleanup this day after a mudslide pushed up against Scotty's packing shed and hailstorm destroyed the bulk of his crop.

This pano was taken 22/July2016, the day after that hailstorm destroyed most of his crop of certified-organic fruit.  And with about 4 inches of rain in a mere few minutes, a mudslide clogged a drainage ditch beside his packing shed forcing silt to spray and ooze in through spaces bugs couldn't get through.  The floors of his refridgeration and packing rooms were covered in the thick mess.

Some challeges are too huge and personal to be sharing here.  But it seemed to me he had finally surrendered to, "what is", even though challenges were piled up on this man.  Still, with help from a couple people, like his farming apprentice (not available for the photo), and old his friend Oro (at left), they had the drainage cleared and the shed floors cleaned up by the next afternoon when I arrived to offer help.

A quick walk-about the small farm this day indicated perhaps 60% or more of his peaches, apples and other fruit were an uninsured loss. Still that smile managed to come over him to prevail at the irony of this past year.  More than images of new destruction, I felt that in this image, merely showing that Nature was greening back up and Scotty's SMILE was also returning .. those were worth sharing here!

More About USA

The United States is one of the most diverse countries on earth, jam packed full of amazing sights from St. Patrick's cathedral in New York to Mount Hollywood California. The Northeast region is where it all started. Thirteen British colonies fought the American Revolution from here and won their independence in the first successful colonial rebellion in history. Take a look at these rolling hills carpeted with foliage along the Hudson river here, north of New York City. The American south is known for its polite people and slow pace of life. Probably they move slowly because it's so hot. Southerners tend not to trust people from "up north" because they talk too fast. Here's a cemetery in Georgia where you can find graves of soldiers from the Civil War.The West Coast is sort of like another country that exists to make the east coast jealous. California is full of nothing but grizzly old miners digging for gold, a few gangster rappers, and then actors. That is to say, the West Coast functions as the imagination of the US, like a weird little brother who teases everybody then gets famous for making freaky art.The central part of the country is flat farmland all the way over to the Rocky Mountains. Up in the northwest corner you can find creative people in places like Portland and Seattle, along with awesome snowboarding and good beer. Text by Steve Smith.
