This is the old stampmill from the historic Gold Bug Mine in Placerville, California. Quartz dug out of the mine would have been hauled here, and pulverized by the immense steel pistons. The crushed quartz would have then been separated from gold using mercury which collects gold. The operation of this monster would have been absolutely deafening!
