Cave Chamber with Bear Skeleton in Sima de los Hoyos
Northern Spain

A well decorated cave chamber in a wild cave, featuring a bear skeleton, calcified into the fine rim-stone floor. This chamber is only accessible by descending a 20m deep vertical shaft from the surface, requiring ropes or cable ladders typically used for cave exploration. The chamber contains the skeletons of several dogs and deer in addition to the bear remains. It appears that the  shaft entrance has acted as a natural trap over thousands of years, with the animals which have fallen in being unable to escape. Their bones perfectly preserved underground where they died.
