Words Respect Pavilion of Minong Village
Taiwan

Words Respect Pavilion of Minong Village, located in Meinong District, is the first of such construction. However, there are different opinions in terms of the building year. Among which 1769 is the most convincing. The pavilion was once damaged in 1895 during battles with the Japanese military and later was repaired and preserved to present days. The three-story brick tower of hollow hexagonal pavilion is simple in design. Its base now enshrines Cangjie, the middle layer is used for incineration of word paper, while the upper sees decorative patterns. The Hakka would present ashes of word paper after burning before the shrines of Cangjie, who is believed to invent characters, to express respect for words. The Words Respect Pavilion witnesses Hakka people’s respective attitude towards words and paper and also reflects prosper cultural atmosphere of Meinong.
