Platform Habitat is a offshore natural gas platform. This is the only platform off the California cost that produces only natural gas and no oil. The workers live out here for a week at a time, then have a week off.

Going up the footpath to enter the Defense Mine you pass under it's old ore chute. This trip was put on by the CA4WDC Panamint valley days 2012. Going with a group is the only safe way to explore these old mines.

Run up to Defense Mine, Panamint Valley Days 2012. Near the 4wd parking area looking up at the mine. The mine shafts are open and it's still fairly safe to go inside. Getting up here takes a well set up 4 wheel drive.
