한국과 중국의 국영에 위치한 순상화산의 산록에 비해 종상화산의 형태를 보이는 백두산정상에 화산활동으로 형성된 칼데라호. 중국에서 백두산 정상은 짚을 타고 쉽게 가지만 이 곳은 죽음의 계단을 박박 기어 올라가는 것이 정상보다 백배는 힘든 곳이다.

대한미국에서 가장 높고 백두대간의 시작인 백두산 천지의 물이 나가는 출구. 달문이라고 부른다. 이 달문을 통과한 천지의 물은 장백폭포를 형성한다. 중국에서는 장백폭포라고 부르지만 한국에서는 비룡폭포라고 불리우던 것이다. 백두산 정상보다 이 곳을 가는 것이 백배는 힘든 곳이다.
