分流郊遊徑路經的古跡名勝甚多，短短的兩公里旅程，就像一條時光隧道，把遊人帶回數百年前的古代。分流之名，源自該處橫截大嶼海峽的兩股水流：西北海水濁黃，東南蔚藍，匯合時翻滾出一條彎曲的分界線，故而名之。分流擁有三個海灣：東灣海灣較長，風較大而少人聚居；西灣風浪平靜，村民多聚居於此。最小的是分流廟灣，建於清朝乾隆年間(1736-1795年)的天后古廟立於灘畔。

由於分流長久以來，並沒有任何行車道路和輪船連接，但可以靠由鳳凰徑步行前往，但路程相當遠，而且崎嶇不平。前往分流，可乘搭港鐵到東涌，然後乘搭新大嶼山巴士11或23線往石壁，亦可在中環碼頭乘小輪前往梅窩，然後轉乘新大嶼山巴士1或2線前往石壁，下車後約步行2小時經狗嶺涌抵達分流。

路徑沿山腰而行，部份路段已加上鐵鏈欄杆，隨後已漸看到分流東灣，緩緩下行一段後來到路口，向左下走分流郊遊徑往分流東灣。
