In the summer, this is a slog through large talus. In the spring, as long as you get up early, the ascent up this section is fun. If you're lazy and leave camp at 10am...prepare for posthole hell...

Hiking up along the Mount Whitney Trail we are about a half mile up the trail with Whitney Portal still below us. Way up just over the saddle in the mountain is Lone Pine Lake where we are headed.

Just before Lone Pine Lake you will cross this Log Bridge along the Mount Whitney Trail. About another 10 minutes up the trail you turn left if you want to visit the Lone Pine Lake and take a break.
