西貢半島上大部分地方，均屬於西貢東和西貢西郊野公園的範圍，合共佔地達7500公頃。北潭涌由於剛好位於兩個公園的中間，所以西貢郊野公園的遊客中心， 就設立在北潭涌巴士總站的旁邊，中心內設有展覽，介紹西貢傳統的鄉村習俗、附近的生態環境及地理特徵、郊野公園的設施及風景區、海岸公園、萬宜水庫及趣味 植物等資料。http://www.fotogb.com/lai/ptc__visitor_centre

北潭涌係香港新界西貢半島南一撻地方。北潭涌響鯽魚湖南面，黃麖地東面，上窰北面。北潭涌原本有六條村，其中北潭涌村係18世紀起一條天主敎客家村。北潭涌響正兩條涌匯合之處，其中大嗰條叫龍坑，係北潭流入來，直流入海。因為呢條涌，所以呢度叫北潭涌。
