Without my noticing, by the time I pitched up my tiny tent the fading light had already pianted the sky orange and yellow and I took this picture in such a hurry that I didn't see that the focus wasn't exactly spot-on.

Strewn with giant boulders the valley floor soon fades into the shadow as the sun begins its descent behind Cerro Rima Rima, a relatively minor peak guarding the left side of the valley.

The dark green lake of Churup (4,450m) lies on a mountain ridge between quebrada Cujop and quebrada Quilcahuanca.  A smaller lake called Churupita sits just below the towering Nevado Churup (5,498m) in front.

Right above me is Huayna Picchu, the steep peak that rises behind Machu Picchu on most postcard view of the ancient site. I climbed it some years ago when it could be done freely but now one has to pre-book to do it.
