1877年、エドワード・シルベスター・モース博士は横浜から新橋へ向かう列車の窓から大森貝塚を発見、それを発掘・調査した。しかし発掘場所をきちんと記録しなかったために、その後真の貝塚の場所を巡って論争となったのだった。 で、これは、現在では本物の大森貝塚と言われている大森貝塚遺跡公園に建っているモース博士の銅像です。
