After a steep ascent from Pian di Boit through beech forest, the trail emerges into alpine meadows near Alpe Terza, which is in ruins. From here on there are lovely views all around.

If the water level is low, parts of the Rio Valgrande riverbed are accessible. The river is deeply cut in and often the banks are sheer cliffs, at times barring the way.

Near the gorge at L'Arca, there's a cave. It's been used as a shelter and has a few utensils lying about, but it's a gloomy, dark and damp place, and not entirely safe if there's a flash flood.

The Costa Nera runs from Pizzo Nona to Bocchetta di Vald. Towards Bocchetta di Vald the ridge becomes ever more rugged, so eventually I had to descend into it's southern flank to make it to the Bocchetta.

Passo di Basagrana can be reached from Trontano. It's over 2000 m high, so one of the higher access routes to the central Val Grande area. It passes near Monte Trontano.

Continuing north-west from Mottac, the trail runs along a rugged ridge but poses no great difficulties. Every now and then there's a view to the wild valleys below.
