The crypt is located directly underneath the rotunda. The purpose of the pillars is to support the massive weight of the cast iron dome that covers the rotunda.

As you come down the walkway from the Atlantic Pavilion you find another quote honoring those who built the arsenal of freedom. You can just see the Capitol dome and of course the Washington Monument.
