The descent finally plunges into the realm of the cloud forest and the landscape is now teemed with all forms of life. Many locals I met along the way here were busily collecting butterfly pupae hanging from the shrubs.

At long last the cloud had finally dispersed to reveal the glaciated peaks of Salkantay which at 6,271m high is the highest mountain in the Willkapampa Range northwest of Cusco.
