The Henry Mountains of southeastern Utah are a sight to see with their pale gray igneous peaks rising above skirts of red sandstone that flank their sides. Between 20 to 30 million years ago magma rose from below to push through the Triassic and Jurassic sandstone and to dome the overlying Cretaceous rocks. Later erosion of the Cretaceous rock exposed the long-cooled magma, now an igneous rock known as diorite porphyry.
In this picture taken above Starr Springs, Mount Hillers and Mount Pennell rise into the storm clouds to the north while Mount Holmes and Mount Ellsworth are similarly lost in the clouds to the south. Some sun reflects off the pale sandstone around the Bullfrog Marina of Lake Powell to the southwest.
