The old church of Sabugo was begun in the beginning of the XIIIth century in the Romanesque style, but took a long time to finish (about 70 years), so it show also some protogothic elements. The church was built for the fishermen that lived in Sabugo, a little hill that was at that time out of the city walls, in the marshes. Carbayo Square was the center of their social life.
