大發工業區在經濟部工業局的策劃推動下，設置於大寮區，是一大型綜合性工業區，總開發面積391公頃，也是大寮區的主要工業發展聚落。區內廠商多半是屬於拆解、金屬及化工等產業，1980年代開始馳名全台灣，以廢五金的拆解裝配最為著名。現今工業區內各式各樣工廠林立，包含化工廠、金屬廠、塑膠廠、電子廠、食品廠、傢俱廠等，產業發展生氣蓬勃。
