长沙开福寺,在长沙城北新河与湘江交汇处凤嘴，有一座殿宇宏伟、气势非凡的千年古寺，这便是三湘名刹开福寺。

开福寺是中国佛教重点开放寺院之一，为禅宗临济宗杨岐派著名寺院，始建于五代时期，距今已有1000多年历史。当时马殷割据湖南，建立楚国，史称“马楚”。马氏以长沙为都城，在城北营建行宫，建有会春园，作为避暑之地。后唐天成二年（公元927年）马殷之子马希范将会春园的一部分施舍给僧人保宁，创建了开福寺。马希范继位后，又在附近大兴土木，旁垒紫微山，北开碧浪湖，使开福寺一带成为著名的风景胜地，有内外16景.
