雞冠山高度海拔210公尺，前後長度約1公里，厚度不超過6公尺，外形獨特，頂端侵蝕分裂成雞冠形狀，因而有「雞冠山」之名。 而燕巢人稱之為「麒麟山」，因其東方突起之岩層像麒麟尾，中央高聳之岩層像雞冠，更像麒麟的背鰭，西方之尖形小山頭像麒麟的頭和腳，是台灣奇特山形之一。
