木下靜涯在台期間為「台灣美術展覽會」（簡稱「台展」）的四位「畫伯」級的催生者之一，歷任「台展」和「府展」東洋畫部的審查員，地位相當尊崇。有一次到南洋旅行寫生，回程時取道台灣，為淡水的明媚風光所吸引，沒想到便愛上了這個地方。
