曲流的發育是因為攻擊坡(直接受水流衝擊的邊坡)持續的侵蝕，使得河道彎曲度不斷加大同時邊坡也變陡，在滑走坡部分則以堆積作用為主而坡度變緩，但滑走坡在後側曲流頸的位置，在河川侵蝕下會逐漸變窄，最終被切穿使河道改道，舊曲流即形成牛軛湖，滑走坡所在的山丘或平台則為環流丘，此為典型的曲流發育地形組合。
